India’s banana export increases by 703%, a jump of 8-fold in 9 yrs, says Piyush Goyal

India’s banana exports have grown 8 fold in the past 9 years during the April-May period, confirmed Piyush Goyal, the union minister of consumer affairs, food & public distribution on Tuesday. The banana export jumped from Rs 26 crore in April-May 2013 to Rs 213 crore in April-May 2022. This is a staggering increase of 703 percent, he added. India is the world's leading producer of bananas with a share of around 25 per cent in total output. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh contribute more than 70 per cent of the country's banana production. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export and Development Authority (APEDA) promotes exports of agricultural and processed food products by providing assistance to the exporters under various components of its scheme such as Infrastructure Development, Quality Development and Market Development.
